Caring for Your Moroccan Rug

An authentic Moroccan rug is more than just a beautiful addition to your space — it’s a piece of living heritage, handwoven from natural wool and steeped in tradition. With a little care, your rug will last for decades and continue to age gracefully over time.

Here’s how to keep your rug looking its best.

1. Regular Maintenance

Shake it out: Take your rug outside and give it a good shake every couple of weeks to loosen dust and dirt.

Vacuum gently: Use a low-suction setting with no rotating brush. Vacuum in the direction of the fibres. Avoid the fringe, which can get caught or unravel.

Rotate periodically: To ensure even wear and prevent fading, rotate your rug every few months — especially in high-traffic areas or near windows.

2. Spot Cleaning

Act fast: Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Don’t rub — this can push the stain deeper into the wool.

Use mild soap + cold water: Mix a small amount of gentle detergent or natural soap with cold water. Dab the stain with a sponge or cloth, then blot dry.

Avoid soaking: Moroccan rugs are made with natural lanolin-rich wool. Too much water can damage the fibres and backing.

3. Deep Cleaning

We recommend a professional clean every 1–2 years, especially for vintage or delicate rugs. Choose a cleaner who specialises in wool or handmade textiles.

If you’re cleaning it at home:

Do it on a dry, warm day so it can air out completely.

Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or hot water.

4. Storing Your Rug

Roll (don’t fold) your rug with the pattern facing outward.

Wrap it in breathable cotton or muslin — never plastic, as it traps moisture.

Store in a cool, dry place off the ground to prevent mildew or moth damage.

5. Natural Characteristics

Keep in mind that handmade wool rugs may shed a little at first — this is completely normal. Over time, the fibres settle and the shedding decreases.

You may also notice slight variations in colour or pattern — these are part of the charm and authenticity of a handcrafted piece.
